Aldwick Trail Print

Aldwick Treasure Trail.

Ideally this fairly short single village trail will start from the Ship Inn – Aldwick Street. Make your way along the road (Westward direction) to The Pound. On entering note the path leads to the right and over a small wooden bridge or bears left through the park. Take the latter and continue to the far end of the park.

The Pound also called Aldwick Green was once part of the Common land in the Manor. However a small part of it was sectioned off in the 18th century to enable the building of a property to house ‘six poor souls’ of Aldwick to be known as Pound House, that you will find later.

At the end of the path find the Blue Plaque notice informing of the Old Aldwick Barracks that had been built in the latter part of the 18th century as a defence against an invasion by Napoleon.

Q. What is the date of the removal of the Barracks as shown on the Plaque?

Now cross the road (Aldwick Street) and walk down towards the sea.  On your right just before the cross roads you will see a drive way entrance to a private home with some beautiful gardens. These gardens were at one time all part of Aldwick Green Common land that you walked through.

Q. What is the name of the house?

At the junction cross over to the Pound and find the wood and iron bench seat that was given by a resident – Mr Rowland Rank.

Rowland Rank was a substantial benefactor to the village. He and his brothers were sons of a famous miller whose business was to became the Rank, Hovis, McDougal group (RHM). Rowland continued the family milling business but his brother Arthur branched out into films and founded the J. Arthur Rank Film Corporation.

Q. What does the bench seat commemorate and what is the date mentioned?

Turn and cross over the road (towards sea) and walk into Barrack Lane. On your left find the Blue Plaque on a gatepost.

Q. To what does it refer and what is the last date shown on the plaque?

Return to the crossroads and turn right towards The Ship; go past and continue along  until the turning " High Trees" on your right. Turn in and find Dark Lane on your left. Follow the lane to the sea and find the plaque on the wall.

Q. Who wrote the three-lined verse on it?

Return to The ship and finish the trail.
