Rottingdean Trail Print

Rottingdean

This very attractive seaside village is full of surprises and things to find. Have fun.

Start from the traffic lights at the main coast road and walk along the High Street until you come to the olde Cottage on your right and take note of the date. Now carry on until the Black Horse pub on your left.

Task 1  Which is the older of the two according to the dates?

Now continue to the small green on your right.

Task 2  Opposite the green you will see Prospect House with a blue plaque. Who is the person named on it?

Task 3  What is the name of the house next door? There is a reference to two
ladies shown. One lived there the other stayed there. What is the name of the latter lady?

Task 4  Cross over to the small green and enter the gardens. As you enter this first part of the gardens there are two things to find. Look for the dovecote and see how many bird holes there are.

Task 5

Now  before you move to the next part of the gardens see if you can find the face on the wall.

Task 6  Continue into the next part and you will a see a notice on a brick pillar. It tells that the gardens had been purchased – when was that?

Task 7  As you come out of the garden turn left and go to the Post-box at the bottom of the road. Below the V – R and over the letter opening there are two words - what are they?

Task 8  Now look at the house to your right. Look closely at the flint walls  of the house and see if you can see any difference to the flint walls around Kipling gardens.

Task 9  Go to the top of the road following round to the right. When you get to the

turning on your left just before the church, look at the wall opposite and find a face in the wall (you might find this difficult).

Task 10  Continue past the church and pond as far as the museum. Turn left towards the Catholic Church of Our Mary of Lourdes. As you walk towards it you will see a lamppost with an unusual sign. It refers to all the children killed in Rottingdean.  Over what period of time?

If you have completed all the tasks well done. If you have completed 8 Tasks that would be very well done.

Now it is time for a good Sussex cream tea in one of the many teashops.
