Alciston - Unknown Dedication |
|
|
Alciston ChurchThe church is without a known dedication and was once part of the Monastery owned by the Monks of Battle Abbey. The present church dates from the 12th century but excavations in 1984 exposed foundations of an earlier building from pre – Conquest times. To approach the church you pass through the very picturesque one road village until you see the church notice board on your left near the end. From the notice there is a short walkway through meadows to the church entrance. As you pass along notice the farm the original site of the monastery, and the remains of a 14th century Dovecote. The church is one of three administered by one priest, the others being Berwick and Selmeston nearby. The monastery was given to the Gage family of Firle after the Dissolution and the village and church remain part of the Gage family estate.
